www.canadianlawyermag.com/inhouse 7 Nick Henn named EVP and chief legal officer at Loblaw Nick Henn was promoted to executive vice president and chief legal officer at Loblaw Companies Limited. Henn has been with Loblaw for close to four years, most recently holding the title of senior vice president, general counsel. He previously worked as general counsel for Loblaw Retail before being promoted to general counsel for the entire Loblaw Companies business in February 2020, a role in which he leads all legal teams across the business, including President's Choice and Joe Fresh brands. Henn has extensive international experience, having lived and worked in Europe, Asia and North America. Phil Kurtz starts new role at Blackberry Phil Kurtz started a new position as vice president, deputy general counsel and corporate secretary at Blackberry. He is responsible for the legal oversight of Blackberry's global corporate governance and board of directors' administration and acquisitions, divestitures, investments, and financings. He also manages public company reporting and disclosure, in addition to insider trading compliance. Corporate organizational matters and equity compensation plans are also in his remit. Kurtz previously held the role of vice president, deputy general counsel and assistant corporate secretary. He has been with Blackberry's legal team for 12 years in varied roles. Kathryn Houlden Joins Torstar as general counsel Torstar Corporation named Kathryn Houlden as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. She replaces Marie Beyette, who has been with the company for 23 years. Houlden previously worked as SVP, general counsel and corporate secretary at DealNet Capital, where she managed legal affairs including mergers and acquisitions, securities, financings, complex litigation, corporate governance, strategic contracting and employment. Houlden has also worked as a corporate lawyer at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP and Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and other strategic corporate matters. Nadia Martel joins board of Taiga Motors Taiga Motors Inc. has announced the appointment of Nadia Martel, a lawyer with over 25 years of experience in international business, mergers and acquisitions, legal and regulatory affairs, risk management and governance, to its board of directors. Martel is vice-president, corporate development and executive management committee member at Sherweb Inc., one of the biggest cloud service providers in North America. In that position, she was in charge of legal affairs, mergers and acquisitions and the development and management of key business relationships. Bell Canada's former CLO joins board of Ivanhoé Cambridge Ivanhoé Cambridge has announced new appointments to the board of directors, including Bell Canada's former chief legal officer, Michel Lalande. Lalande replaces Macky Tall as chairperson. Ivanhoé Cambridge is a real estate subsidiary of Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, a Canada-based institutional fund manager. Lalande was appointed as CDPQ's executive vice- president, legal affairs and secretariat on Oct. 26, 2020. Lalande has worked at BCE Inc. and Bell Canada for two decades, most recently as chief legal officer and corporate secretary. At Teleglobe, he served as legal affairs director and dealt with international transactions, partnerships, and financing. Mary-Jane Richards named director of policy at Shopify Canadian-grown, global e-commerce giant, Shopify, has named Mary- Jane Richards as director of policy, effective April 2021. Richards previously held the title of associate general counsel, commercial at Shopify, for seven years. She has also worked at Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, where she practiced general corporate and commercial law, emphasizing telecommunications and broadcasting. Richards has experience negotiating and drafting various commercial agreements, including services, content distribution and licensing agreements.
