In 1992, when Stanford was lamenting the lack of choice and style in robes, Barnes was busy designing a line of men's white shirts. Each had special features for different professions — such as one offering a split cuff, by the wrist bone, so the architect's sleeve never con- tacted with lead from drawing plans. Stanford remembers the first shirt she got from Barnes. It not only fit her body type but it was made of "beautiful" crisp, cool cotton with French cuffs and exquisite detailing such as mother of pearl buttons. Barnes also made the garment func- tional.
