"Time-starved" members of the legal profession were quick to opt for the new service, she says. Since she started some 20 years ago, word-of-mouth adver- tising has bolstered her customer roster to more than 3,000, with approximately 60 judges, all in British Columbia and Alberta. Recently, when Alberta appointed 100 Queen's counsel, 27 sought out Barnes for new robes. "We made up 27 sets of robes in a month and a half. I spent 10 days just cutting, through 162 metres of black silk in her atelier. Barnes, who is not a tailor but a design- " she notes. Michelle Stan- ford, now practising in Kamloops, B.C., was disappointed with the options, which offered cookie-cutter designs and lim- ited selection of materials.
