If you're going to try virtual articling, the
obvious fi rst step is to introduce video and
messaging technologies that can make it
happen. Choose what works for you, but
make sure the student, lawyers, and staff
are all trained and comfortable using the
platform to stay constantly in touch. Take
some comfort in the fact that a lot of stu-
dents coming out of law schools are savvy
enough to easily navigate or institute many
of these technologies.
If your law fi rm does not have its own physical space, it's important to sign up for
access to a meeting space at a convenient location. Grogan's principal has access to a
boardroom at another law fi rm for client meetings, which articling students should
participate in whenever possible.
In order to meet his supervisory and coun-
selling responsibilities as an articling prin-
cipal, Morris at Round Table Law meets
with his student via video conferencing
each morning to discuss the day's work.
He also makes time to meet with Grogan
in person. Along with practical training,
articling principals should also ensure stu-
dents are gaining ethical, professional, and
customer service experience through op-
portunities for exposure to clients and the
fi rm's lawyers.
