At present, only one firm, Nightingale on Demand, has attained certification Infoway. To meet certification, the company's software underwent rigor- ous evaluation and testing to show that it met privacy, security, and operational standards set by the federal agency. This includes meeting standards set out in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. The certification criteria also meet from Canada Health the standards set out in the province's privacy legislation. "Vendors had to prove patient-identifying information would not be transferred without prop- er authority. That was one of the checks and balances," says Cascadden. "There must also be a record of the patient's disclosure directive. "Both of those [requirements]," she notes, "are in the legislation." They provide doctors with comprehensive access to patient information, increase produc- tivity by reducing paperwork, and ulti- mately enable better quality of care for patients.
