"I
thought it would be really
neat to come down, watch
rodeo, meet cowboys, and
learn law." That is the light-
hearted way Andrea James one of the
first three graduates of the Internation-
al Energy Lawyers Program described
her involvement in the joint University
of Calgary-University of Houston dual-
degree initiative. The program qualifies
graduates to seek admission to state
and provincial bars in both Canada
and the United States. Two of the three
graduates expect to remain in the U.S.,
the third is heading back to a position
with DLA Piper Canada LLP.
The program is designed to train
lawyers who will make their mark in the
international energy sector and Houston
and Calgary make a nice fit. "They're
both cities known for energy and oil
and gas," says Leonard Baynes dean of
the University of Houston Law Center,
"they're both dynamic cities." Ian Hollo-
way, dean of the University of Calgary law
school agrees. "[T]he fact that our two
law schools have come together reflects . .
. and embodies that dynamism that char-
acterizes both cities."
Now that the first graduates are
through the program both schools
are looking for ways to expand the
program. "Employers like the fact we
are working together," says Holloway
"because we are producing something
real and relevant for the future."
Three students from the University
of Houston Law Center will be heading
for Calgary next year. The IELP pro-
gram requires two years at each school
in order to complete a four-year degree
program.
