"Romance bloomed and we were wed," she said. With Foster's insis- tence their merged law firm Holmes and Isherwood reflected her name first. Foster retired from the firm in 2006 and died in 2011. Isherwood is aware of the difficulties women still face in law and striving to stay in a profession yet balance today's life-work needs. "I was fortunate and able to return to [an] office where I had worked as secretary and was accepted and knew the staff and the principal. I also knew the clients," she said, adding when her husband joined the firm years later, he was interested in keeping her as a partner in all aspects of his life. Her advice to women lawyers who consider leaving law is to hang in there and be proud of your accomplish- ments as women now make up more than half of the population within law classes at UBC. "I would say that if you made the decision to go into law and spent years studying, stay with it. You have gotten over a great hurdle to reach that point. That is an accom- plishment in itself," she said. Isherwood has remained in law for 64 years and has no plan to retire. She has earned a raft of accolades for her dedication to the profession and the community. Awards include the Victo- ria Women's Pioneer's Award, a lifetime legacy award from the University of Victoria, and in 2013, the Queen's Jubi- lee Award.
