The process for finding the new PPSC director began early last year. The selec- tion committee, which included repre- sentatives from each recognized political party, the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, the deputy minister of justice, the associate deputy minister of public safety, and a member of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, then consult- ed with provincial and territorial attor- neys general, provincial heads of pros- ecutions, senior government officials, and senior members of the legal profes- sion, according to the Department of Justice. Of the 24 applications received, the selection committee identified eight as having the qualifications needed for the position and recommended three to Minister of Justice Rob Nicholson. The minister then selected Saunders and for- warded his recommendation on to Par- liament. "Mr. Saunders' expertise and dedi- cation to working in the best interest of Canadians were proven during his time as acting director," Nicholson com- mented. "As director of public prosecu- tions, Mr. Saunders will continue to be instrumental in maintaining the level of excellence Canadians expect from their criminal justice system."
