REAL ESTATE with this, but, to the extent that they will, it puts us back in the game in the refinancing business, which we've been out of for many years." — SOLE PRACTITIONER ROBERT ADOURIAN potentially huge development for real estate lawyers, who have long been concerned about losing their role in the mortgage refinance business to in-house lawyers or outside intermediar- ies, such as title insurance firms. "It will be interesting to see if all banks will work with this, but, to the extent that they will, it puts us back in the game in the refinancing business, which we've been out of for many years," he says. Usher is also excited about this opportunity. "It makes the bank dealing with me out here just as simple as dealing with a big service provider," he says. "We can combine the best of both worlds: the personal service delivery of a community law firm with the simplicity of that technical interface — both for instructing and for reporting — that the banks have said for a couple of decades they want. We're really getting there. It's a real win for everyone." As Usher points out, the technology is no longer the prob- lem, but what remains to be seen is whether the big banks seize this opportunity and recognize the value of dealing with lawyers in the community, rather than continue to cut lawyers out by making wholesale deals with outsourcers. He says he now has the technology that allows him to provide personal, community-based service at a competitive rate but "can't compete with what's been negotiated on a golf course in Toronto."
