Bruce Maunder, one of the town's five O lawyers, says he and his family were not in Slave Lake when the evacuation order came in. "I was on Vancouver Island for three days and my wife and daughter were in south India on vacation." Maunder says his house was completely destroyed but miraculously his business was untouched, even though the businesses beside his law office were destroyed. "I was left with the clothes I was wearing and one change of clothes." At the end of May, Maunder n May 15, Slave Lake, Alta.'s five lawyers had their lives forever changed. A forest fire burned was staying temporarily in an apartment in Edmonton with his dog Oba. His wife and daughter were set to join him once they returned to Canada. "Slave Lake is 'home' and I plan to rebuild," vowed Maunder. As for his legal practice, which is mostly criminal law, that's up in the air. He says he still has to attend court but because the town's courthouse burned down, Slave Lake's cases have been moved to High Prairie, an hour and a half away. "Most people don't know that our court has been relocated so it will be difficult to know how things will work out, especially considering the entire town has been evacuated to other towns and cities throughout northern Alberta and some roads are still closed due to the many forest fires still burning."
