the prAIrIes PERLOV STEWART LAWYERS JOIN TDS T hompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP has bulked up its stable of lawyers through a merger with Perlov Stewart LLP, a deal that frees up one of Winnipeg's top commercial law practitioners to spend more time on clients' needs. The merger that took effect June 1 sees all four Perlov Stewart lawyers — David Perlov, Allan Stewart, Peter Sim, and Gerald Ashcroft — shift their practices to TDS. Their exper- tise is expected to broaden the firm's strength in several key practice areas, including business, financial services, environment, family, criminal, creditors' rights, labour and employment, civil litiga- tion, wills and estates, and real estate. Perlov developed a wide-ranging commercial law practice All Perlov Stewart's lawyers, (l to r) Allan Stewart, David Perlov, Peter Sim, and Gerald Ashcroft, have joined TDS. Meanwhile, Douglas says the firm of about 70 lawyers remains open to future growth. "I wouldn't mind seeing the law firm grow by another half-dozen lawyers," he says. "Some of that can come over time organi- cally. It's nice to find people with self- sustaining practices who can simply move in, and become active parts of the law firm." — ROBERT TODD rtodd@clbmedia.ca Subscribe today to Canadian Lawyer after hanging a shingle in Winnipeg following his call to the bar in 1975. Stewart joined him in 1982, with Perlov serving as the managing partner until the recent merger. The entrepreneurial 60-year-old — who is involved in sev- eral businesses aside from his legal practice, such as a truck cab manufacturer and fishing lodge — says his firm resisted merger offers in the past. But Perlov decided now was the right time to let go of the demanding administrative tasks that crammed his schedule. "Running my own law firm over these years, and being the managing partner, it's difficult for me to have in the past thought about making a change where I'm not calling the shots, or I'm not in charge of making decisions," he says. "But I recognized also that with the quality of practice I have — the type of clients, the type of work — there could be a significant easing up in terms of the pressures associated with the practice itself." He says that urge, and the strong performance of TDS lawyers on a recent file he and the firm collaborated on, fuelled the merger. It also helped that he has a strong relationship with TDS CEO and managing partner Donald Douglas, with whom he went to law school at the University of Manitoba. Douglas says he admires the drive Perlov has shown in developing his law firm from scratch, and expects the merger to strengthen TDS' penetration of the Winnipeg-area business community.
