TECH SUPPORT LG FLATRON E2350V-SN MONITOR W hy would you upgrade a monitor unless you were buying a new com- puter or your old one was broken? A few reasons, as I discovered recently when I reviewed the LG Flatron E2350V-SN. The E2350V is a 23-inch widescreen LED monitor that sells for about $300. It's not top-of-the-line, it wouldn't do for a graphics professional, for example, but for the average lawyer, it kicks. And if you haven't upgraded in a few years — as I hadn't — modern LED monitors are a revelation. To clarify, LED (light-emitting diode) refers to the backlighting used. This is still an LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor. Manufacturers call them LED monitors so you'll think they're something totally new and amazing. LED backlighting is more even, less power hungry, and delivers signifi cantly improved image contrast — a 5,000,000:1 ratio, which sounds astronomically high if you last checked LCD specs a few years ago. Better contrast means blacker blacks: everything looks crisper. My old monitor was a 19-incher with a 4:3 aspect ratio (width to height). This one is 16:9 with a pixel resolution (the other main measure of detail and crispness) of 1920x1080. The additional width and higher resolution mean I can fi t more on the screen. I can arrange windows to overlap, and then quickly fl ip between them without having to use the Windows task bar. The other great thing about this, and other modern monitor products: it doubles as a TV monitor. You can use it to view business videos in the boardroom. The resolution means it's full 1080p high-defi ni- tion. The E2350V even has an HDMI connection (the highest quality all-digital connection for HD TV). In fact, it has three types of connectors: DVI (digital connection for a PC), RGB (analog for a PC), and HDMI. You can connect multiple devices (desktop PC, laptop, Blu-ray player) and fl ip between them using the touch panel at the front of the monitor. That's why you might want to upgrade your monitor. Dye & Durham is the Largest Supplier of Indexes — GB It was mostly a matter of remov- ing "small barriers." In the past, for example, lawyers had to look up a number and dial long distance to reach a colleague in another office quickly, and they couldn't easily for- ward a voice mail between offices. Now they can interact with anyone in the firm as easily and quickly as they can with someone down the hall. As the Drake example makes clear, this isn't just a matter of saving lawyers trouble. It makes people more acces- sible and responsive too, another key objective for the project. One way the technology helps make lawyers more responsive is by enabling single-num- ber calling. If a client calls, the phone rings wherever the lawyer is, or wher- ever he directs the system to ring at — office, home, mobile — or all three. Drake surprised one client by answer- ing a call on his mobile when the client, having lost that number, had called his office expecting only voice mail. "He was delighted with that and we got underway on something that otherwise we wouldn't have got underway for a couple of days," says Drake. Many have become so e-mail-centric they forget to check voice mail, says Callaghan. "If you get a call from a client at 10 [a.m.] and you don't respond until you think to check voice mail at 5 [p.m.], that's not very responsive," he points out. With UC, lawyers receive voice mails as audio file attachments in e-mails, including on their BlackBerrys. He also likes the way the system can automatically respond to a voice mail from a person in his Outlook address lists by sending an e-mail when he's away from the office. "'Michael Drake is currently out of office,' etc. That respon- siveness is something clients appreciate," says Drake.
