McLennan Ross LLP says it is proud to be the first Canadian law firm to join The Climate Registry in anticipation of future climate legislation. i t's not just energy companies affected by Canada's Climate Change Plan. In the near future, all businesses will be, "As an Alberta-based law firm, we believe it is important to take a leadership role in environmental law and join The Climate Registry," says Doug Evanchuk, a partner and the lead on this initiative. The Climate Registry is a non-profit collaboration among North American states, provinces, territories, and native sovereign nations that sets standards to calculate, verify, and publicly report greenhouse gas emissions into a single registry. Evanchuk says by joining the registry, McLennan Ross can educate its clients and help them get ahead of the regulatory curve. "The key is to recog- nize that legislation to reduce emissions will eventually come and we want to raise that awareness now." Such legisla- tion will not just be directed at large final emitters who put out over 100,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year at a single stationary source. McLennan Ross will develop a working knowledge of the registry's reporting protocols and will be in a position to show its clients how future legislation can affect them and how they can deal with it. Registry members will identify all sources of GHG emissions; calculate emissions according to The Climate Registry protocols; verify emissions with an ANSI-(American National Standards Institute) accredited and registry-recog- nized verification body; and report veri- fied, entity-wide emissions data to the public through The Climate Registry.
