regional wrap-up LAWYERS PRODUCE WRESTLING FLICK T wo B.C. lawyers and a film school graduate have produced a wres- tling flick now available on DVD after it won a number of smaller inde- pendent film awards. "This is not the Cannes Film Festival," quips Vancouver business lawyer Michael Raven, who in 2006 tag-teamed with former fellow articling student Pete Smith (wrestler now lawyer) and high school pal and producer Michael Scully to make the "mockumentary" entitled Kayfabe. Kayfabe is a wrestling term used to describe the process of protecting an image, such as two wrestlers perceived as arch ring-rivals who protect that public image but in private life may be good friends. The script idea came about when Smith, who for many years worked the pro-wrestling cir- cuit under the name of "Rocket" Randy Tyler before entering law, used to regale Raven and Scully with tales of the wrestling world. The trio decided they had a dead- lock on a good script. Kayfabe's script came alive in 2007-08 after $50,000 was raised and propped up by the trio's own pool of cash. They starred, pro- duced, wrote, and distributed the flick. Kayfabe's main star is Smith (who now heads up a TSX firm and teaches criminology at Simon Fraser University), who is featured Powering Firms. Empowering People.
