Douglas says he expects future growth to come from hiring young associates out of law school and enticing more senior people to join from competing firms. A merger is another possibility, he says. "If we could find another firm that would fit for us, then we would look at doing that as well. It can be hard to find that fit because people develop their own style of doing things, but we wouldn't be immune to discussions of that nature," he says. Douglas says he was honoured to be selected to the new post by the firm's partners. "The key feature for the man- aging partner of a law firm is the trust that is extended in you by the fellow law- yers in the firm. I've always the said the position doesn't have much power but it has considerable influence," he says. — GK Training tomorrow's leaders A mid all the doom-and-gloom chatter about women leaving the legal profession in droves, the University of Toronto's law school and Rotman School of Management have launched a leadership program for women lawyers who've chosen to stick it out in the legal field. Lianne Krakauer, the former as- sistant dean of career services at the law school, says the issue of women dropping out of the profession has been around for decades. And while women constitute more than half of law school grads, their numbers are decimated within five years — the result being a scarcity of models for women who want to move into the upper echelons of the profes- sion. Thus, a year ago, Krakauer started looking into the issue and the idea for a leadership course was born. In mid-April it came to fruition, with the launch of the first session of 22 women lawyers in their fifth to eighth year of practice. Held at Rot- man's executive education facility in Toronto, the program is an intensive three-day course for "high potential" women associates and new partners.
