Pro bono work allows lawyers to make meaningful contributions to the lives of others. As part of our national commitment to access to justice, the pro bono policies at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) reflect our professional responsibility to help individuals in our communities who would otherwise be unable to access legal services. BLG's pro bono activities are identified, co-ordinated, and monitored by regional pro bono committees and overseen by our National Pro Bono Committee. This ensures that our pro bono clients receive the same high level of service as all of our clients. BLG's pro bono work ranges from advocacy to legal advice to community legal education. Recently, our lawyers acted as courtroom advocates for the family of victim Lin Jun, during the high-profile murder trial of Luka Magnotta. Our team provided legal advice, guided Mr. Lin's family through the Canadian justice system, and contributed to the creation of the Lin Jun Family Trust. A BLG Team also provided pro bono representation to Réjean Hinse, who was wrongfully convicted of armed robbery in 1964 and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Mr. Hinse was acquitted in 1997 when the Supreme Court concluded he was the victim of a botched investigation. In a landmark civil lawsuit, BLG's team worked tirelessly to secure an award of $13.1M from the Federal and Québec governments. For more information about BLG's pro bono initiatives, please visit blg.com. BLG: COMMITTED TO OUR COMMUNITY, COMMITTED TO PRO BONO As soon as we read about the Lin Jun case, my colleague Amélie Gouin and I were moved as Canadians to contact the Lin family to offer pro bono support. Whether a case is this emotionally challenging – or not – we take great pride in BLG's national commitment to pro bono, which is helping to improve the justice system. Daniel Urbas, Partner, BLG Daran Lin, father of murder victim Jun Lin, leaves the court- room in Montreal on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 with Amélie Gouin (Ryan Remiorz / THE CANADIAN PRESS) 9
