"The legal sys- tems are often reflective of society and how society approaches fundamental questions of law," said Ben Goold, direc- tor of CALS, which houses Canada's larg- est collection of academics and visiting scholars teaching and researching Asian law. CALS' scope includes China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, with an emphasis on Indonesia and Vietnam. Goold said many of the Asian countries have their legal system intertwined with non-Asian countries. For example, Japan draws its early legal system from Germany, after which it was influenced by American law. This merging of traditional law in Asian countries plus derivatives from other nations produces different approaches to how law is applied. "It produces some interesting answers to academic questions," says Goold. "We are becoming increasingly interested in Asian law." Also, says Goold: "Law is becoming a global enterprise." More Western countries are interacting with the Asian countries. While CALS is known for attracting inter- national visiting scholars and researchers, most students are local. "The vast majority —- about 80 per cent — of students are Canadian," says Goold. CALS, which has roots going back to the 1980s, boasts an extensive library RegIonal wRap-up growing interest in asian law as globalization grows 'We are becoming increas- ingly interested in Asian law," says Ben Goold.
