ntil now, all Ontario lawyers had to complete the
traditional articling process before being called
to the bar. But last November, the Law Society of
Upper Canada announced it would be running the
law practice program, a pilot project intended to
give aspiring lawyers an alternative pathway to the Ontario bar.
Ryerson University in Toronto will deliver the English-language
LPP and the University of Ottawa will deliver it in French. e ex-
periential legal training program will consist of a four-month train-
ing course and a four-month work placement. e LSUC outlined
the competencies for the foundational skills it requires students
enrolled in the LPP to develop. ey include: negotiation, draing,
interviewing, strategy, tactics, ethics, professional responsibility, and
an understanding of how to manage a law practice. e LSUC esti-
mates the total licensing fee for the LPP will be $5,311 per student.
