Name: Rebecca Bromwich
Firm: Gowling WLG
Title: National Diversity
& Inclusion Manager
Age: 43
Years in the industry: 17
Career highlight: When Bill C -16 passed. I
had worked on earlier iterations of the bill to
ensure transgender and non-binary people are
protected from discrimination and hate crime
explicitly in the Criminal Code and in Human
Rights legislation, and it was wonderful to
see law reform succeed after many years of
advocacy even though I had left my role at the
CBA and was no longer involved with the file
when it finally passed. It was a long journey!
Career Lowlight: I was told by my original PhD
supervisor that my proposed thesis project
was "not law" and "not viable." This was really
devastating at the time, but with the support of
my family, colleagues and friends, I transferred
to another university, did the project, got a
university medal for my research, published
the thesis as a book and that book won a book
prize. So, my lowlight, as it turns out, was
ultimately a pause on the way to new highlights.
