I had worked on earlier iterations of the bill to ensure transgender and non-binary people are protected from discrimination and hate crime explicitly in the Criminal Code and in Human Rights legislation, and it was wonderful to see law reform succeed after many years of advocacy even though I had left my role at the CBA and was no longer involved with the file when it finally passed. It was a long journey! Career Lowlight: I was told by my original PhD supervisor that my proposed thesis project was "not law" and "not viable." This was really devastating at the time, but with the support of my family, colleagues and friends, I transferred to another university, did the project, got a university medal for my research, published the thesis as a book and that book won a book prize. So, my lowlight, as it turns out, was ultimately a pause on the way to new highlights. PROFILE
