opinion EDITOR ' S DESK BY GAIL J. COHEN News from the home front A THIS MONTH ON C ANADIAN Law ye rmag.com EXCLUSIVE ONLINE COLUMNS ug. 4 was just an ordinary day of editing the stories for this issue of Canadian Lawyer when publisher Karen Lorimer and I were called into a meeting with our company president at which we were given the official news that our publications, Canadian Lawyer, InHouse, 4Students, and Law Times, had been sold to Carswell Thomson Reuters. We were part of a larger deal that will see Canada Law Book, a division of The Cartwright Group Ltd. owned by former judge Ian Cartwright, aligned with Carswell. Also part of the deal are CLB Media's legal directories that include the Canadian Law List. What it means? Well, we'll have new owners and a lot more colleagues around the world working in the same company. We'll no longer be a privately owned business and some of the legalese in our masthead changes to reflect the new ownership. And, probably a year down the road, our offices will be moving. What won't be changing is the award-winning editorial team that will continue to bring our readers informative, insightful, and sometimes controversial news, information, and opinion both in print and online. However, we are definitely looking forward to the many new opportunities available to us through this acquisition to improve and expand our offer- ings of the well-respected and comprehensive all-Canadian legal news coverage that we have become known for. The future is bright. — gcohen@clbmedia.ca CORRECTION If he thinks like one, looks like one, acts like one. . . . Some might say, in the parlance of the securities markets, that due diligence was somewhat lacking. Doug Hyndman, chair- man and CEO of the Canadian Securities Transition Office in Vancouver was named one of The Top 25 Most Influential in the law in Canada. While he is and will have a great impact on securities regulation in this country, he did not officially meet the list's criteria of being a lawyer. But as one of the many readers who wrote in to correct Canadian Lawyer, Hyndman is not a lawyer but "brilliant like one and thinks like one." Perhaps our friends at one of the fine law schools across this country should consider him for an honorary law degree and bring him into the fold. In addition, Marlys Edwardh's firm was incorrectly named in the article. She is currently the principal of Marlys Edwardh Barristers PC. The IT Girl Sarah Dale-Harris takes a wry look at the intersection of technology and the law.
